Chassis Availability Poses a Large Threat To The Global Supply Chain
The strained global supply chain now faces another glaring hurdle as chassis providers have warned that with equipment production maxed out through next year, “There is no more production capacity to be had on the face of the earth that can help us for the balance of this year” when it comes to new chassis production. A scenario not wanted in the ears of those in the industry that has already faced so much in the wake of the pandemic.
How Did We Get Here?
It would be great if this was the only issue facing the supply chain at this moment, but unfortunately, that is not the case, the industry faces various other factors that have strained production.
- Continued Covid spikes have further strained the labor supplies at many container terminals, resulting in a backlog of vessels waiting to berth.
- Limited labor availability at warehouses, road freight providers, and drayage providers.
- Rail congestion
- Limited chassis availability, with no relief set for 2022
The brutal outlook for the chassis availability is a result of over 15 months of elevated Asian imports and stressed functional capacity throughout varying transport modes within the supply chain. Importers, struggling with packed warehouses, are now not able to cycle chassis back to the ports, tying up the movement of containers at ports and rail yards.
According to Mike Wilson, CEO of Consolidated Chassis Management, in the Southeast, the “street dwell” of chassis with containers was 6.3 days before the Covid-19 pandemic, and now it sits a nearly double that at about 11.2 days.
In essence, the lack of hiring US workers and construction of US plants, combined with the crippling tariffs and duties levied on China Intermodal Marine Containers, did not bode well paired with the heightened import volumes.
The unfortunate realization of foreign dependence on these resources has sparked domestic investment, it will take until 2023 until the large backlog of orders is fulfilled.
